‘Consulate not doing enough for Hajis’

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Former Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker Shoaib Iqbal on Friday charged the Indian Consulate in Jeddah with not doing enough for the Haj pilgrims from the country.

“The Indian Consulate, which is responsible for providing temporary accommodation for over one lakh pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, has been offering three categories of lodging. But the accommodation being offered to the pilgrims is very far from the pilgrimage site and the pilgrims, most of them aged people and in poor health, will have to spend considerable time travelling to and fro. The pilgrims have to visit the site five times a day and it will be very exhausting for them,” said Mr. Iqbal, who represents Matia Mahal in the Delhi Assembly.

He said even charges for the accommodation were exorbitant. Mr. Iqbal has sought intervention by the Prime Minister and UPA chief.
