SRINAGAR: President Pratibha Patil on Friday lauded the role of the Army in maintaining the peace in the region and asked troops to be vigilant to meet any eventuality in the border areas.

The President, on a daylong visit to Rajouri district in Jammu, met senior army officers and troopers. In forward areas, she was briefed on the situation on the Line of Control.

Addressing the troops, she urged them to maintain a high degree of preparedness.

She expressed full satisfaction with the exemplary work being done by them to tackle terrorism and ensure normality in Jammu and Kashmir. “Every citizen of India is proud of you all,” she said.

Army’s role lauded

Ms. Patil praised the Army also for its endeavour under Operation Sadbhavana in improving civil infrastructure, and in socio-economic spheres for the well-being and advancement of the local people.

Later, she attended a ‘Sainik Bhoj,’ where she interacted with all ranks of troops.

Ms. Patil was accompanied by Governor N.N. Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor, and General Officer Commanding the Northern Command Lt. Gen. B.S. Jaswal.
