No use of plastic, polythene during Baliyatra fair

Police make elaborate security arrangements

CUTTACK: The Cuttack district administration and Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) have decided to work jointly to ensure that use of plastics and polythene are banned during the Baliyatra festival beginning here from November 2.

The administration has also decided that the historic festival this year would be limited to only of five days, instead of nine days as was held last year and if the State government so desires, the fair would be extended maximum by another two days.

“It has been decided by the municipality and the district administration to restrict the festival to only five days and there would be a blanket ban on use of plastics and polythene at the fair grounds”, said the district Collector Kishore Kumar Mohanty after the second preparatory meeting for the festival. Earthen cups and glasses would replace the plastic cups and glasses during the festival, he added.

Since the fair grounds have been expanded by nearly 1,500 square feet this year, at least 1,000 stalls would be given permission and the exit gates of both the grounds would be increased for the smooth movement of visitors. Besides, the stall owners have been asked in clear terms to adhere to the fire safety norms and make adequate fire fighting measures ready at their disposal for any eventuality.

While the district administration collected nearly Rs. 32 lakh as revenue from the fair last year, this year the revenue earning has been targeted at Rs. 40 lakhs. Similarly, it has been decided to insure the fair grounds for a whopping amount of Rs. 4 crores which was Rs. 3 crores last year.

The Commissionerate Police too have made elaborate security arrangements at both the fair grounds and at all the nearby roads leading to the fair site.
