Boy’s death in accident sparks off tension

People beat up tipper driver before handing him over
to the police

Bangalore: A nine-year-old boy died on the spot when a tipper reversed and reportedly hit the parked two-wheeler on which he and his uncle Dinesh were sitting.

The accident occurred at Prajavani Layout near Devasandra here on Friday. There was tension on Devasandra Road for a while following the accident.

The boy was identified as Rajesh Kumar, son of Umender Sahu.

The K.R. Puram traffic police are investigating the case..

Based on statements of eyewitnesses, the police said: “Rajesh and his uncle were sitting on a parked moped. Around 6.30 p.m. the tipper which was reversing to unload mud and other waste material hit the moped.”

The boy, who was trapped under the rear wheels of the tipper, died on the spot while his uncle sustained severe injuries, the police said.

Meanwhile, agitated bystanders and local residents attempted to torch the tipper. They demanded compensation for the victim’s family and beat up the driver before handing him over to the police.

The public also raised slogans against the police. Traffic was affected for a while on Devasandra Road and peripheral roads.

The driver, identified as Durgappa (21) of Raichur, was severely injured and is undergoing treatment. A case has been registered against him, the K.R. Puram traffic police said.
