Rs. 15-crore action plan to develop Madikeri

Rs. 9.88 crore earmarked for works in first phase

CMC authorities pulled up for not spending funds


Madikeri: An action plan involving Rs. 15 crore from the Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Towns Development Project (CMSMTDP) for 2009-10 for developing infrastructure and slums in Madikeri in the first phase has been sent to the State Government through the Department of Municipal Administration (DMA).

The district in-charge Minister has approved the action plan in consultation with the MLAs and MLCs from the district. The action plan for the second phase of development, involving another instalment of Rs. 15 crore for 2010-11 is ready. It will be sent to the Deputy Commissioner in a few days and later to the district in-charge Minister, Madikeri City Municipal Council Commissioner Srikanth Rao told The Hindu on Sunday.

In the first phase, Rs. 9.88 crore had been earmarked by the CMC for building roads, drains, repairing roads, construction of footpaths, retaining walls, etc. A sum of Rs. 3 crore had been earmarked for the development of slums in Madikeri. A sum of Rs. 1 crore had been kept aside for construction of a private bus stand in the city. For installation of high mast streetlights, Rs. 62 lakh had been earmarked and Rs. 50 lakh for the Kundamestri drinking water project, Mr. Rao said.

A sum of Rs. 50 lakh will be spent on construction of a drain on one side of Indiranagar and retaining walls to prevent landslides up to a stretch of two km. A sum of Rs. 30 lakh will be spent on construction of drains and culverts from the Ukkuda community hall to Somwarpet road. A sum of Rs. 16.75 lakh will be spent on construction of a retaining wall, raising the drain level, and drain repair in Tyagaraja Colony; Rs. 16 lakh on widening the road from Indiranagar borewell to the community hall in Chamundeshwarinagar; Rs. 15 lakh on widening the pathway from the Indiranagar community hall to Mangalore road; and Rs. 13 lakh on water supply from Indiranagar to Talatmane.

Mr. Rao said Rs. 38.65 lakh would be spent on asphalting the road from Kundurumotte temple, Stewart Hill and Filter House, Rs. 36 lakh on construction of concrete drains from PWD Quarters to Christian cemetery, Rs. 35 lakh on construction of drains from the Stewart Hill junction-Christian cemetery-Children Home, Rs. 32 lakh on construction of drains and culverts at selected points from Chaingate-Banemotte-Ganapathi temple-Ashwatha Katte.

He said Rs. 30.32 lakh had been earmarked for construction of a drain on one side of the road from the CMC office to the town police station, Rs. 25 lakh for drains from the Gowda Samaja to the main entrance of the Government Junior College, Rs. 23 lakh for construction of a concrete road from the Ashwini Hospital till Mysore road contact point and construction of a drain on one side of it.

Mr. Rao said Rs. 36 lakh had been earmarked for construction of a drain on one side of the road from the office of the Superintendent of Police-Hotel Coorg International till convent junction, Rs. 32 lakh for construction of a drain from Indira Gandhi Circle-Ganapathi Street-Mahadevpet water tank, Rs. 30 lakh for construction of a drain from Muthappa temple to CMC Pourakarmikas Quarters on one side of the road, Rs. 28 lakh for construction of a retaining wall and drain on one side of the road in the New Extension area.

A sum of Rs. 40 lakh each would be used for construction of a retaining wall near KSRTC Bus Stand and the main drain on Gowli Street, Rs. 30 lakh for construction of a retaining wall across the drain on Gowli Street. A sum of Rs. 50 lakh would be spent on installing high mast lamps at Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa Circle, Major Muthanna Circle, Raja Seat junction, Indira Gandhi Circle, near the market, DAR junction, convent junction, A.V. School junction, Muthappa temple junction (on way to the Abbi Falls), Kohinoor road and Sri Omkareshwar temple circle. For providing lighting equipment to new street light installations, Rs. 12 lakh had been earmarked, Mr. Rao said. Besides, Rs. 50 lakh would be spent on the Kundamestri drinking water project, he added.

CMC pulled up

The Department of Municipal Administration (DMA) had reportedly pulled up the CMC authorities for not spending the funds released to it under the 12th Finance Commission grants for 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10, Mr. Rao said. The DMA had asked the CMC to prepare action plans and complete projects to the tune of Rs. 2.67 crore by November 15. Only then, Rs. 15 crore for 2009-10 would be released to the CMC, Mr. Rao said.
