Dam offers spectacular view

Chitradurga: The Rangayyanadurga dam in the district looks spectacular following the discharge of excess water from all its five crest gates.

The dam, located nearly 70 km from here, has been receiving enormous amounts of water following heavy rain in the district. Built across the Jinigihalla stream near Bommalinganahalli in Molakalmur taluk, the dam is one among the major constructions in the district that provides irrigation to farmlands.

Started way back in 1975, the major part of work on the dam is complete, while construction of canals and an approach road is proposed to be over by 2011.

During the 70s, the dam was estimated to cost only Rs. 3.15 crore, but delays for various reasons resulted in cost escalation to Rs. 16.80 crore. “The objective was to provide irrigation facility to 2,572 hectares of land in Molakalmur taluk, which is one of the most backward regions in the State,” G.R. Devaraj, Executive Engineer, Minor Irrigation Department, told presspersons.

Mr. Devaraj said the department also planned to build four barrages across the dam to prevent outflow of 200 cusecs to Andhra Pradesh.
