HYDERABAD: A 40-year-old man, who turned into a misogynist after his two wives abandoned him, was taken into custody on charges of killing seven women around the State capital, police said on Tuesday.

The alleged serial killer used to lure lonely women to secluded spots by offering liquor and money and strangle them for the last six years.

The arrested man, identified as Maina Ramulu ekes out his living by working as a daily-wage earner. His latest victim was a woman, aged around 30, who was killed at Narsingi a week before Dasara festival, Cyberabad Police Commissioner S. Prabhakar Reddy told a press conference.

The labourer would befriend women at toddy compounds, take them to isolated places offering liquor or money and strangle them to death using their saris, Mr. Reddy said. He would take away the silver and gold jewellery worn by the victims and sell it.

Ramulu of Artula village in neighbouring Medak district developed a hatred for women following strained relations with his two wives. His first wife reportedly eloped with a security guard. Later, he married another woman, who deserted him after giving birth to two children.

Seven murders

After being caught on a tip-off, the labourer confessed to committing seven murders. Based on his statement, the putrefied body of his latest victim was recovered from bushes at Narsingi.
