Proud moment: Shravan R. Koushik and J. Sudharshan of DAV Boys Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram, who won the regional final of The Hindu Young World Quiz with (from left) S. Ramanathan, CEO, S&M Kids Wear, actor Vivek and Joint Editor of The Hindu Nirmala Lakshman in Chennai on Monday. — CHENNAI: The average age of those in the auditorium would have been about 13, but the intelligence quotient and awareness, well above what one would associate with that age. The tenth edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz held here on Monday saw some impressive quizzing by school students. The six teams that made it to the regional final from the nearly 750 teams that took part in the preliminary rounds, kept their audience entertained for about two hours, often surprising many, including quizmaster V.V. Ramanan, with their penchant for trivia. From identifying Seethalai Sathanar as the author of Manimegalai to identifying the musical score of Rolex watches, there were several interesting questions and answers in the quiz that kept the audience engaged till the very end. The audience, too, had enthusiastic members getting many answers, and winning a lot of prizes and goodies. A little boy in the audience getting the answer about Suddhodana and Mayadevi, the parents of Buddha, evoked a spontaneous round of applause. Shravan R. Koushik and J. Sudharshan of DAV Boys Senior Secondary School, Gopalapuram, Chennai, who won the regional final to make it to the national final to be held in Coimbatore on November 6, accumulated their points steadily. The other teams of this regional round were from National Public School, which emerged runners up, SBOA School and Junior College that came third, VVNKM School (Vellore), Modern Senior Secondary School and Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram that stood fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Actor Vivek, who was the chief guest, commended the participants for their performance. “I feel very small and little before you,” he said. The Hindu is synonymous with authentic news, and a quiz conducted by the newspaper was bound to be of a very high standard, he said. S&M Kids Wear was the title sponsor, while Kalasalingam University was the associate sponsor. The top three regional winners bagged Rs.8,000, Rs.6,000and Rs.4,000.
