MADURAI: Police recovered 152 saris, including many expensive silk saris valued at Rs.11.51 lakh and arrested four women and a lone man.

As there is heavy Deepavali rush in textile showrooms, the police have cautioned the public against thieves and strangers.

They had information that some thieves, mostly women, were moving under the guise of potential customers and indulged in stealing brand new saris. Following this, Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan formed exclusive teams to monitor the movement of suspicious persons.

The special team comprising Assistant Commissioner of Police Illangeswaran, Inspector Kannadasan, and Sub-Inspectors Balamurugan and Regina were on the lookout for suspects at vantage locations in plainclothes with policemen.

When a woman was moving in a suspicious manner, Ms. Regina picked up a conversation. Not realising that she was talking to a woman police officer, the suspect revealed that she had brand new sais in her possession and offered to sell them at lesser price than the ones being sold at leading stores.

The woman SI was shown a large number of saris and further inquiries revealed that there was a gang behind the suspect. At one stage, senior officers led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) V. Jeyashri found that the women stole new saris from shops and sold them at lesser price. Yamuna and Jothiammal of Subramaniapuram, Shanti of Karimedu, Tamarai of Sellur and Deenadayalan of Konnavayan Salai were arrested. Mr. Nandabalan described the catch as a major one.
