Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A total of 1642 motorcyclists were booked by the suburban police in the last two days for not displaying their registration plates prominently on their vehicles. The vehicle checks were carried out following a prior notice issued by the police directing motorists to replace fancy plates within 10 days.

According to police sources, the first phase of vehicle checks was carried out from 9 a. m. to 1 p. m. on Tuesday by police teams at various points in St. Thomas Mount, Tambaram, Maduravoyal, Poonamallee, Ambattur, Avadi, Madhavaram, Manali and other areas in the suburban police limits.

The suburban traffic police on Tuesday booked 833 motorcyclists for having registration plates that did not conform to specifications.

The drive was conducted 10 days after the police issued a notice warning to owners of vehicles with such registration plates of action if they did not replace them.

Vehicles with registration plates on which the numbers and alphabets were written in a way that could not be read easily were booked under the Motor Vehicle Act and the users made to pay fine.

A total of Rs.1 lakh was collected from 833 motorcyclists.

The drive would continue, sources added.
