“Adhere to crop cultivation techniques and protect their crops from attacks by pests or diseases” PUDUKOTTAI: With a view to motivating the farmers to take to pulses cultivation, the district has been selected for intensive pulses development programme. In a press release issued on the occasion of “World Food Day” here recently, the District Collector, A. Suganthi, said that special efforts had been taken to increase the area under pulses cultivation in the district. Pointing out that the pulses yielded more assured returns, she appealed to the farmers to go in for high-breed varieties for increasing both their productivity and profitability. The Department of Agricultural Marketing and Agri Business had started marketing outlets for ensuring adequate returns to the pulses cultivators, she added. Explaining the consultancy services being offered by agricultural scientists, the Collector advised the farmers to strictly adhere to the crop cultivation techniques and protect their crops from attacks by pests or diseases. On the advantages of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) technique, Ms. Suganthi appealed to paddy growers to switch over to this strategy, for ensuring higher yield with less use of irrigation. The SRI technique, she said, involved the use of bio-fertilisers, thereby restoring the texture and nutrients of soil. With the district registering rainfall far below average recordings this year, the SRI technique would come in handy for paddy farmers, she said.
