23 people killed in rain-related incidents

Rs. 1.74 crore distributed as compensation so far


Karwar: Adequate compensation is being given to those who suffered losses owing to torrential rainfall on October 2 and 3 in Uttara Kannada district, according a press release from the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

According to statistics compiled by the district administration till October 16, 267 houses had collapsed and 936 houses partially damaged in the rain. As many as 23 people were killed in the district in rain-related incidents. Loss to livestock has been put at 60. Agricultural corps on 1987.85 hectares of land and horticulture crops on 168 hectares had damaged.

The loss in the district had been estimated at Rs. 69.77 crore, the press release said.

So far, the district administration has distributed Rs. 1.74 crore as compensation to the affected people and released Rs. 3.07 crore for taking up various development projects.

Karwar taluk

In Karwar taluk, Baad hobli recorded loss of Rs. 19,05,194, and Rs. 1,86,650 has been distributed so far as compensation among the affected people; Ghadasayi hobli recorded loss of Rs. 25,47,000, and compensation of Rs. 2, 61,540 has been distributed; Chittakula hobli registered loss of Rs. 4,53,911, and compensation of Rs. 94,830 has been distributed so far; Kinnar hobli recorded loss of Rs. 31,15,300, and Rs. 4,30,430 has been distributed so far as compensation.

The loss to horticulture crops in the taluk has been put at Rs. 10 lakh, and compensation of Rs. 1,66,478 distributed so far, according to the press release.
