Bangalore: The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Working President D.K. Shivakumar on Friday alleged that the Akshaya Patra Foundation, associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon), was found selling the rice supplied to it by the State Government for the mid-day meal scheme, at a marriage hall in Bangalore. Congress workers, who found about 4,500 bags of rice stored at Kanyakumari Kalyan Mantap in Nagarabhavi 2nd Stage, staged a demonstration in front of the marriage hall demanding arrest of the persons involved in the illegal sale of rice. “One kg of rice costs between Rs. 25 and Rs. 35 in the market but we were told it was available for Rs. 15 a kg at the marriage hall. We went to check and found that rice provided by the State Government for the midday meal scheme was being illegally sold there,” Mr. Hanumanthappa alleged. Food and Civil Supply officials, who inspected the marriage hall, sealed the premises. No criminal case has been registered. Iskcon and Akshaya Patra Foundation, denied any rice sale saying the rice bags were stored in the marriage hall legally.
