Exports touch 1,10,470 tonnes in six months


Marginal decline in export of coir mats

Better incentives sought for export-oriented industry


KOCHI: Export of coir and coir products registered a growth of 12.5 per cent in quantity and 10.51 per cent in terms of value from April to September 2009, indicating a revival of the global export market.

Exports touched 1,10,470 tonnes valued at Rs.351.46 crore during the report period as against 98,162 tonnes valued at Rs.318.02 crore during the same period last year.

Coir mats, however, registered a marginal decline of two per cent while in value terms it registered a growth of seven per cent, as compared to the previous year.

Reviewing the export performance for the current fiscal at a board meeting here on Saturday, Coir Board Chairman V.S. Vijayaraghavan expressed confidence that the coir export target of Rs.700 crore for 2009-10 would even be surpassed.

The meeting reviewed the problem of coir fibre and yarn shortage felt in the production sector following unprecedented export of coir fibre and considered a proposal for the revival of defunct coir fibre extraction units, established under the Integrated Coir Development Project (ICDP), with the support of the State government to overcome the problem.

The board also decided to represent to the Centre for enhancing the incentives for export-oriented coir industry, according to a release.

It approved a proposal for organising the golden jubilee of the Central Coir Research Institute, Kalavoor, later this year along with an exposition to highlight the technological upgrading taken place in the production sector and the contributions of the CCRI and the Central Institute of Coir Technology (CICT), Bangalore, in this regard.
