Under ‘Artificial re-charge of groundwater through dug- ells in hard rock areas’

TIRUCHI: As many as 1,175 dug-wells in five blocks in the district will be re-charged under the Centrally-sponsored ‘Artificial re-charge of groundwater through dug-wells in hard-rock areas.’

A subsidy of Rs.45.36 lakh was sanctioned to the farmers owning these dug-wells in Thuraiyur, Uppliyapuram, Thathaiyengarpet, Musiri and Manapparai blocks in the district, the Collector, T. Soundiah, said. Presiding over the district-level monitoring committee constituted for the implementation of the scheme sanctioned by the National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD) here recently, he said that these blocks had been identified for augmenting irrigational facility through artificial re-charge of groundwater.

The quantum of subsidy was Rs.4,000 for a small or marginal farmer, and Rs.2,000 for a big farmer. He said that this was the sixth phase of the sanction by the monitoring committee. In the earlier five phases, a subsidy amounting to Rs.3.16 crore had been released for artificial re-charge of 8,361 dug-wells in these blocks.

Mr. Soundiah appealed to the beneficiary-farmers to execute the programme without delay in consultation with the officials of the Public Works Department; elected representatives of local bodies and field level revenue officials.

Explaining the advantage of the scheme, Mr. Soundiah said that the artificial re-charge would go a long way in ensuring adequate irrigational facility for the farmers. Pointing out that a good number of farmers of these blocks owning dug-wells in their fields were yet to avail themselves of the benefits of the scheme, the Collector advised them to submit their applications along with necessary documents to the field level co-ordinators. The beneficiary should furnish the number of the bank account to which the subsidy would be credited.

The Collector said that the district administration has taken all efforts for expeditious implementation of the scheme. Interested farmers could contact the following officials of the Ground Water Division of Public Works Department for seeking any clarification: K. Prasad, Assistant Director, (94421-48990); Thuraiyur and Uppliyapuram blocks: S. Gajendran, Assistant Geologist (99940-35391); Thathaeingarpet and Musiri blocks: S. Arumugam, Assistant Geologist (94431-70721); Manapparai block: Vembu, Assistant Engineer (94862-92690).

The Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, T. Vijayakumar and the District Development Manager, NABARD, Solomon Paul Jayaraj were among those who participated in the meeting.
