BANGALORE: Is the small lime in your kitchen pinching your pocket these days? Blame it on the erratic rain that has wreaked havoc on the lime orchards in north Karnataka resulting in a rise in prices. If it was inadequate rain during June and July, the second flowering season of the year, that caused the present price rise, heavy rainfall in September and October, the third flowering season, has caused enormous damage to the crop; a cause for concern as it is expected to push prices even higher. Lime was already in short supply due to a decline in the area of cultivation in the recent years.
A good quality lemon, which used to cost about a rupee in August, September and October, is now priced at Rs. 4. Even second quality lime, which used to cost about 50 paise, is now commanding a price of about Rs. 2 in the local market. According to a lime grower in Bijapur, which has the largest area under lime cultivation in Karnataka, rain in September and October will cause flowers to drop at fruit-setting. “Lack of rain in June and July resulted in low yields. Besides, good quality fruit is being exported or used in the pickle industry,” the farmer said. The low supply is affecting traders adversely. “It has become difficult to procure lime these days. While we were handling 2 to 3 tonnes daily, it has dropped to just about 4 quintals now,” a HOPCOMS official told The Hindu. The average price for a kilogram of lime at HOPCOMS in August 2007 and August 2008 was Rs. 20.89 and Rs. 21.52, respectively. However, in August 2009 it shot up to Rs. 81.60 a kilogram. Similarly, while the price for a kilogram of lime in September 2007 and September 2008 was Rs. 43.60 and Rs. 51.62, respectively, the price rose to Rs. 122.08 in September 2009.
