Officials reopen Sunkesula canal

Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: The KC Canal was re-opened on Sunday for the first time after its bunds got breached on October 2.

The Irrigation Department authorities released 300 cusecs into the canal after carrying out initial repairs to immediately meet the drinking water demand of Kurnool city. However, the authorities did not touch the major repairs to the barrage and the earthen embankments which had breached in the flood.

The KC Canal bunds which got breached to a distance of 3 km were repaired temporarily and the silt from the canal bed was removed. An official said the canal could carry water to a depth of four feet for the time being. Meanwhile, the authorities were yet to convince the residents of Rajoli on the left bank who were vociferous in their demand for a full-fledged rehabilitation package. The residents of the village falling under Mahabubnagar district were demanding five cents land, a house and Rs. 5 lakh compensation for each acre of agriculture land lost.

Kurnool Collector Mukesh Kumar Meena and other irrigation officials were present when the canal was re-opened.
