Rise in pollution levels post Deepavali

Hyderabad: There was a significant increase in the concentrations of RSPM and TSPM levels in residential areas during this Deepavali. The noise levels too registered an increase in commercial and residential areas.

Monitoring of ambient air quality in the city by the A.P. Pollution Control Board showed that the RSPM level shot up by approximately 36 per cent on Deepavali day in residential, commercial and other areas when compared the previous day.

In sensitive areas the increase was by 39 per cent.

The average values in mg/M3 of RSPM concentrations on October 17 were 386 (residential, commercial and other rural areas), 221 (industrial), 196 (sensitive). The TSPM values were 553, 467 and 260 respectively.

The RSPM concentrations on October 18 were 154 (residential, commercial and other areas), 180 (industrial) and 107 (sensitive).

The TSPM values were 272, 369 and 182. The standard values for these zones are 100, 150, 75 (RSPM) and 200, 500, 100 (TSPM).

The percentage of Residual Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) to TSPM in normal days is around 40 but on the day of Deepavali it was around 70 in residential areas.

The APPCB monitored the parameters of RSPM, TSPM, SO2 and NOx for 24 hours in three shifts for eight hour duration at all the stations.
