HYDERABAD: Several senior Congress leaders have cautioned the people against the designs of the “divisive forces” that were trying to fuel differences among the people of communal lines. The Congress leaders, including Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, Bihar Governor Devanand Konwar, Rajya Sabha member V. Hanumanth Rao and APCC president D. Srinivas have asked the people to emulate former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi who strove for peaceful co-existence. They were participating in a public meeting convened on the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Yatra commemoration day. Mr. Konwar and Care Hospital chairman B. Soma Raju were presented the Sadbhavana awards for their services to society in their respective fields. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rosaiah recalled the services of Rajiv Gandhi who ushered in economic reforms with his progressive ideas and new thoughts. Mr. Konwar said the visionary approach of the former Prime Minister enabled devolution of powers to Panchayat Raj bodies following 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution. Recalling his association with former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, he said Rajasekhara Reddy tried to emulate Rajiv Gandhi in taking steps to strengthen the local bodies and improve the conditions in rural areas. Mr. Srinivas presided over the meeting while Mr. Hanumanth Rao, Dr. Somaraju and others also spoke.
