A mix of variety events, competitions at Tathva 09

A sum of Rs.8 lakh being offered as prize money

Several exhibitions organised as part of Tathva 09


KOZHIKODE: Suhas Gopinath, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Global ITES Private Limited, Bangalore, will inaugurate ‘Tathva 09’, the annual techno-management festival of the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C), at its campus, near here, on Thursday.

The festival will be held on the NIT-C campus from Friday to Sunday. A total of Rs.8 lakh is being offered as prize money for various events being held as part of Tathva 09.

There will be competitions, lectures, workshops and exhibitions for the three days.

Competitions

Coding geniuses will want to test their skills in ‘Koder Kombat’ and Linux freaks will want to use their skills at Linux Shell scripting to duel it out in ‘Tux of War’.

A new event called ‘Mouse Drive’ will make students take an every day object like a computer mouse and use it to manoeuvre a vehicle through an obstacle course.

In ‘Unimate’, participants should buy required parts and tools using virtual money to assemble machine parts given. ‘Erectheion’ is an on-the-spot model making contest where models will be tested for stability.

‘NAVYgator’ is an event in which participants must use heat from a normal candle to create steam that must be used to propel a boat.

In ‘CheAutic’, participants should design and build a self propelled car that runs on a controlled chemical reaction. ‘Spotlight’ is an open event for innovators around the country. NIT-C opens its gates to schoolchildren in ‘Junior Genius’.

‘B-Aptist’ is a business plan competition aimed at budding entrepreneurs to implement their vision into reality.

For the first time, Tathva will host an International online programming contest where participants can compete with programmers across the country. Individual software innovators can publish their software in Open Software.

An online stock trading game called ‘Bulls N Bears’ has also been launched. Tathva also has an online quiz, a quiz for engineers and management geniuses as well.

‘Transformers’ is an event in which students must design and build an energy converter that converts one form of energy into electrical energy. ‘Re-Charge’ makes participants design a portable battery charger to charge an AA size rechargeable battery of 1.5V.

Other events

Several exhibitions have been organised as part of Tathva. An air show involving radio controlled aircraft and an exhibition on solar technology will be organised by NPOL, an organisation of DRDO.

Workshops on Ethical Hacking, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Aeromodelling, and Web Designing have been planned this year.

The lectures will continue with Prahlad Vadakkepatt, a professor at the National University of Singapore and robot enthusiast, addressing the students on Friday. Ing Fitzner a German professor and scientist from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, will also be on the podium the same day.

IIM-K director Debashish Chatterjee will lecture the students on ‘Life Beyond Career and Curriculum’ on Saturday. Dr. B.N. Suresh, director of IIST, will also address the students followed by a panel discussion on the same day. Nobel Laureate Dr. Harold Kroto will make an appearance via video conference on the same day.

Automobile show

‘Wheels’, an annual automobile show held at Tathva will feature new events like concept car design, friction and go-karting.
