PSPB awards presented

NEW DELHI: Saina Nehwal got the Sportsperson of the Year award at the Petroluem Sports Promotion Board annual awards function here on Wednesday.

The function, however, lost some gloss because many awardees could not be present due to various reasons. The function starting 75 minutes late was another show-spoiler.

Pankaj Advani, Abhijeet Gupta, Monalisa Mehta and Baljit Singh were present to receive their awards.

World professional billiards champion Advani said: “This awards means a lot to me, I really value the award It feels great to be honoured by your own employer,” he said.

Awards for 2008-09: Sportsperson of the Year: Saina Nehwal (badminton); Elite Sportsperson for the Year: Pankaj Advani (billiards-snooker), Gautam Gambhir (cricket), Anoop Sridhar (badminton), Abhijeet Gupta (chess); Meritorious Sportspersons of the Year: Chetan Anand (badminton), Ishant Sharma (cricket), Baljit Singh and V. Raghunath (hockey), A. Sharath Kamal (table tennis); Lifetime Achievement: Romeo James (hockey).

Awards for 2007-08: Sportspersons of the Year: Pankaj Advani (billiards and snooker) and Virender Sehwag (cricket); Elite Sportspersons for the Year: Chitra K. Soman (athletics), A. Sharath Kamal (table tennis), Prabhjot Singh (hockey), Gautam Gambhir (cricket); Meritorious Sportspersons of the Year: Rajpal Singh (hockey), K. Humpy (chess), Tushar Khandekar (hockey), Ishant Sharma (cricket), Abhijeet Gupta (chess); Lifetime Achievement: Monalisa Mehta (table tennis).
