Move to enhance services for PLHAs

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: AIDS and Leprosy Officer for Krishna district T.V.S.N. Sastry on Wednesday advised People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs) to adopt a realistic approach while dealing with issues confronting them.

Addressing the inaugural of a co-ordination meeting between the city-based Telugu Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (TNP+) and representatives of the District AIDS Prevention Control Unit (DAPCU) here on Wednesday, Dr. Sastry said it was for the PLHAs to identify and highlight issues that marred development of the community. “Let’s not get carried away by statistics. We need to take into account ground realities and act accordingly,” he contended.

Dr. Sastry said since the ‘positive network’ activists were from among the PLHAs, they would be in a better position to understand the lacunae and bring them to the notice of government officials. Mere implementation of programmes introduced by the Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) would not serve the purpose. The volunteers must play a constructive role in mitigating the woes of the virus-afflicted population, he felt. The meeting is an initiative to strengthen district care services for PLHAs. The programme is being implemented in nine districts of the State, including Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Khammam, Nellore, Kadapa, East Godavari, Karimnagar and Nizamabad. Under the project, the TNP+ has created a District Reporting Associate (DRA), who will work closely with the DAPCU or the District Project Manager to monitor and facilitate the District HIV programmes.
