RAMANATHAPURAM: The Regional Centre of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Mandapam, organised a 10-day training programme in popularising ornamental fish culture. The programme, sponsored by the National Fisheries Development Board, was attended by middle level officers of Fisheries department and other fisheries developmental agencies from West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. Many scientists and technicians also took part. Aruna Basu Sarcar, Chief Conservator of Forest and Director, Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve Trust (GOMBRT), K.K. Vass, Director, Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute and others took part in the valedictory function held at Mandapam on Thursday. G. Gopakumar, Scientist-in-Charge, said the training programme was the first step towards the development of a lucrative trade of hatchery produced marine ornamental fishes in the country.
