Review: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishwanath Hegde Kageri at a meeting in Chitradurga on Thursday. Chitradurga: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishwanath Hegde Kageri has said that the Government is contemplating the abolition of the post of Cluster Assistant Education Officer (CAEO). Speaking to The Hindu after attending a review meeting here on Thursday, he said that several education officers in the State were of the opinion that Block Education Officers were competent enough to handle the work of the CAEOs, whose job it is to monitor the functioning of high schools. “Based on their opinion, an appropriate decision will soon be taken in this regard,” he said. OppositionDuring the review meeting the Minister sought the opinion of district- and taluk-level officers who had expressed their unanimous opposition to retaining the post. ‘Prepare’Mr. Kageri also instructed the officers of the Department of Education to be prepare students for the new SSLC question paper pattern. He said that the department had already despatched the blueprint of the new question paper, which has 75 per cent essay-type and 25 per cent objective-type questions. “Many students are still under the notion that the question papers will have more objective-type questions like last year,” he said. With regard to the distribution of books and uniforms in flood-affected districts of north Karnataka, he asserted that the Government had been making efforts to ensure that classes were not hindered because of the inadequate supply of books. Schools damagedMr. Hegde said that 207 schools had been partially damaged by rain and the loss was estimated at Rs. 1.76 crore in the district. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had been consulting educationists and NGOs seeking their help to provide better facilities in the schools that were hit by floods, be said. “We have also directed the district administration of the flood-hit districts to take immediate steps to ensure that schools continue to function, particularly those schools that have been temporality converted into gruel centres,” he said. He urged Janardhana Swamy, MP, and Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas to ensure that the schools were repaired using the Calamity Relief Fund. Mr. Hegde said that department had decided to retain the Nali-Kali scheme because of the good response it was getting. Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer Rangegowda was present at the meeting .
