Letters to the Editor
The shocking picture of Diwakar Bhattacharya (Oct. 21), the police officer shot dead by naxalites, exposes the cruel face of Maoists. Their aim is to weaken the government machinery by creating anarchy. The governments at the Centre and the States should, at all costs, control the internal menace to save our democracy. T.T. Aboobacker, Malappuram The picture of the slain Sub-Inspector slumped in his chair is shocking and sad. Was the police officer on duty at the time of the incident? Why is he seen dressed casually and not in uniform? The news that firearms, including rifles, revolvers and pistols were looted from the station shows all that the ultras have to do to procure arms is to attack a police post. Usha Sundar, Chennai It is shocking and painful to see our policemen suffering at the hands of naxalites. The killing of police officers in West Bengal and Jharkhand reflects the severity of the situation. The focus should be on equipping the police force well, rather than on compensating the families of policemen upon their death.Asit Kumar Maharana, Bhubaneswar
