Vidit closer to GM-norm

NEW DELHI: Vidit Gujarathi brightened his prospects of gaining a Grandmaster norm by holding Russian GM Dmitry Kokarev in the sixth round of the Chigorin memorial International Master chess tournament at St. Petersburg on Wednesday.

The youngster proved equal to his fancied rival rated 207 points higher at 2630. Vidit, who has so beaten one Russian GM and held three others to reach four points, will take yet another Russian GM Dmitry Bocharov, rated 2607, in the next round.

Meanwhile, top seed P. Hari Krishna and Sandipan Chanda won their games to join compatriot Parimarjan Negi in the joint fifth spot at 4.5 points. Three more rounds remain in the competition.

The results (involving Indians): Sixth round: Pavel Maletin (Rus, 4.5) drew with Parimarjan Negi (4); Sergey Ionov (Rus, 3.5) lost to P. Hari Krishna (4.5); Sandipan Chanda (4.5) bt Denis Yevseev (Rus, 3.5); Vidit Gujarathi (3.5) drew with Dmitry Kokarev (3.5).
