TIRUNELVELI: District Collector M. Jayaraman has appealed to the farmers to switch over to system of rice intensification procedure from the conventional paddy cultivating methods as the new technique was giving an excellent yield. Grievance dayAddressing the farmers’ grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate on Friday, Mr. Jayaraman said the SRI method, requiring less water for irrigation, had increased the yield by 40 to 45 per cent and the government was giving attractive incentives to the farmers following this procedure. “While the yield in the conventional method stands between 6 to 7.50 tonnes per hectare, the SRI technique has even ensured an attractive yield of 10 tonnes per hectare. Hence, the farmers should follow the SRI technique to increase the paddy yield,” he appealed. When the farmers told the Collectors that there were some problems in getting permission for taking the fertile silt from the tanks to the farms, the Assistant Director (Mines) Mohanasundaram said permission was being accorded instantly if the farmers submitted a proper application in this connection to the tahsildar concerned. The Collector also told the tahsildars to give permission without delay for taking silt from the dry tanks. He ordered the officials to open direct procurement centres at Palayamkottai and at an appropriate place near Vellankuzhi, Kallidaikurichi and Veeravanallur.
