People of Bandoli village yet to get compensation Three weeks after…

T.V. Sivanandan

hard times: The receding floodwaters have left Hanumavva’s fields in Bandoli village full of silt.

BANDOLI (GULBARGA District): “I know the silt left behind by the floods will make my land fertile, but I will have to forgo at least three crops before taking up sowing on my land next year,” says Hanumavva of Bandoli village situated on the banks of the Krishna.

She grows jowar, bajra, red gram and other rain-fed crops. Small and marginal farmers have no resources to dig borewells that can help them grow crops such as paddy and cotton.

The farmers who have lost their crops are yet to receive compensation. The authorities have not completed assessment of crop loss in the district.

Hanumavva’s house remained submerged for four days after floodwaters entered her village. She and her family members have returned home and are now depending on foodgrains provided by the Government for survival.

Hurdles

Shyamsunder, Aladal Gram Panchayat member and farmer from Havinahal village, says that farmers are facing several hurdles in getting their land assessed properly for crop loss.

“We have spent around Rs. 20,000 on growing paddy on one acre of land. The Government should pay at least Rs. 10,000 an acre as compensation,” he says.

Revenue officials have created confusion among the people over shifting of flood-hit villages. People of Havinahal have been told that they have to bear at least one-third of the cost of the land to be acquired for relocating their village, Mr. Shyamsunder says.
