THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Coir Workers’ Union, which is affiliated to the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), proposes to join hands with other trade unions to organise an agitation for gaining for the coir workers the minimum wages announced by the government nearly four decades ago, union president G. Sugunan has said. In a statement here on Friday, he said that, even under the employment guarantee scheme of the government, the daily wage for a worker was fixed at the level of Rs.125. The State government had taken a decision to enhance this to Rs.160. However, the coir worker was getting only Rs.90 a day as wage. In fact, as per the minimum wages formula announced for the coir workers way back in 1972, the daily wage in this sector should have been Rs.176 now.
