KOCHI: The Kochi port achieved a productivity record by unloading 10,024 tonnes of industrial salt in bulk from the vessel Luxury SW on October 18. This is the highest quantity of industrial salt handled in one day at the port, said a press release here. The ship, which carried 23,110 tonnes of salt for Travancore Cochin Chemicals, was berthed at the Q6 berth of the Ernakulam wharf. The release said the achievement had been made possible by the teamwork and coordination among the port’s workforce in the traffic department, the stevedores, the vessel agent and the transporters. Another productivity record was achieved in the second week of October while handling urea from the ship World Trader. An average daily output of over 5,000 tonnes was achieved while unloading the cargo, the release said. This was the highest productivity in urea-handling at the port. The vessel had brought 33,000 tonnes of urea in bulk for Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd. This was also the largest parcel size of urea received at the port. With the record performances, the port had proved that it was on a par in productivity level with the ports such as those in Kandla and Chennai. With the shifting of the container terminal operation from Willingdon Island to Vallarpadam, two deep draft berths and large backup areas would be available for handling various types of cargo on the island, for which the port was exploring various possibilities. Against this backdrop, the port recently conducted a trade promotion meeting in Coimbatore last week, which got good response with participation from 80 representatives of the trade circles. G. Krishnakumar, Deputy Chairman, Cochin Port Trust, chaired the meeting. Traffic Manager Rajendra P. Paibir, Additional Traffic Manager Vipin R. Menoth, Marketing Officer P. Sudhir and Deputy Traffic Manager Jimmy George spoke.
