Metro rail works to be launched in six months

Special Correspondent

HMRL asked to open at least some segments for traffic by March 2014

The project will have three corridors covering a total distance of over 70 km

HYDERABAD: Officials of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), a special vehicle floated to implement the metro rail project taken up for Hyderabad as part of a Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS), have been asked by the government to ground the project works by May next and open at least some important segments to traffic by March 2014.

This deadline was set by Chief Minister K. Rosaiah while reviewing the project on Monday. N.V.S. Reddy, MD, HMRL, told the Chief Minister that pre-qualification bids received from companies in response to fresh tenders would be opened on November 2 and the financial bids on January 22. It may be recalled that the government had scrapped the agreements signed with the Maytas Infra consortium to implement the project, whose cost under this agreement was put at Rs. 12,232 crore, following inordinate delay. The project will have three corridors covering a total distance of over 70 km, the first from Miyapur to LB Nagar, the second Jubilee Bus Station to Palaknuma and third Nagole to Shilparamam.

“The project should move fast with officials adhering to the timeframe fixed to achieve the milestones,” Mr. Rosaiah said, adding that it was delayed earlier due to circumstances beyond the government control. He said it must be completed on fast track by 2014.”
