19,558 hectare under SRI method in Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM: Of the total planned cultivable area of 1,10,300 hectare for Samba cultivation, about 63,634 hectare has been brought under Samba transplantation and 14,953 ha under direct sowing. Therefore, about 78,587 hectare have fallen under Samba crop. Additionally, about 25,647 ha have been brought under Thaladi crop cultivation. A total of 19,558 hectare of cultivable area are under SRI cultivation.

In a release issued here, Collector C. Munianathan said that under the National Agricultural Insurance scheme, farmers with Paddy as the second crop were entitled to insure their crops. Farmers who have acquired loans from primary cooperative societies and commercial banks could pay the premium amount upto December 31, and others up to December 15. Of Rs.177.30 crore paid by farmers towards crop insurance premium for 2008, 50 per cent of the insurance indemnity was being disbursed to about 1,65,465 farmers through primary cooperative societies.

Agricultural inputs for cultivation, viz, 2,544 mts, DAP 1,960 mts, Potash 480 mts, Complex 215 mts and other fertilizers were available for farmers.

Through Kumbakonam Central Cooperative Bank, about 8,244 farmers have received crop loans to the tune of Rs.16.22 crore, 4,906 farmers have received agricultural jewel loans to the tune of Rs.14.92 crore. Additionally, about 13,150 farmers have received crop loans to the tune of Rs.31.14 crore. Similarly, about 81,665 farmers have received about Rs.273.80 crore towards crop loans and agricultural jewel loans in the district.
