Former judge Ashok Kumar dead


CHENNAI: S.Ashok Kumar, former Judge of the Madras and Andhra Pradesh High Courts, passed away here on Sunday at a private hospital after a brief illness.

Born on July 20, 1947 to teacher-parents in Tenkulam Pudur in Tirunelveli district, he did his B. L. in Madras Law College in 1968 after completing his M.Sc. He practised as an advocate in Tirunelveli from 1971 to 1987 and was appointed District and Sessions judge. He had served as Principal Sessions Judge in Dindigul, Tiruvannamalai and Cuddalore districts.

In October 2002, he became Principal Judge in Chennai. In April 2003 he was elevated as an additional Judge of the Madras High Court. In 2008 he was made a Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court from where he retired in July this year. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

Among the cases that he handled was the mini flyover scam case in Chennai as Principal Sessions Judge, in which the then Mayor M.K.Stalin was among the accused.

DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, who was an accused in the case, was arrested along with others. When the case came up for hearing before Mr. Ashok Kumar, he questioned the need for arresting Mr. Karunanidhi, given his age and health condition.
