Entertainment tax exemption

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday asked the local bodies to ensure that entertainment tax exemption granted to Malayalam film ‘Pazhassi Raja’ was passed on to the cinema-goers in the whole State.

Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan passed the interim direction on a writ petition filed by D. Prakashan of Cherthala. According to him, the government had granted 50 per cent tax exemption to the film.

However, this had not been passed on to the cinema viewers. The tax exemption was given to attract the audience and not enrich the producer. He alleged that the cinema owners and the producers were appropriating the concessions.

The petitioner sought a declaration that the benefits of exemption granted for the film was passed on to the audience.
