This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru is understood to have dwelt at length on the Sino-Indian border issue when he addressed the Governors’ conference in New Delhi on October 28. Mr. Nehru was assisted by the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. K.S. Thimayya, and the Foreign Secretary, Mr. S. Dutt, in explaining the border situation. The security measures taken all along the border by the deployment of troops in the place of civil and police forces were fully explained by the Chief of Staff with the aid of maps. As the frontier runs along several States such as Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam, the Governors of these States were anxious to seek clarifications about the measures adopted to prevent further incursions. Mr. Nehru gave the Governors the reasons for the attitude taken by India in the United Nations on the question of the entry of China into the organisation though there was resentment in the country about China’s hostile attitude towards India.
