Initiative to popularise bird-watching

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State unit of the WWF-India and the Warblers and Waders here will organise the ‘Kerala Bird Race 2009’ in the capital city on November 15 as part of a national event to be held across the country.

A release from the WWF said the race would be organised in Ernakulam and Kozhikode too.

Objective

Its primary objective is to promote and popularise bird-watching among the public to create awareness of birds and related facts.

The bird race is a single day dawn-to-dusk activity. The date has been chosen as it is a holiday close to the birthday of Salim Ali (November 12).

Gathering information

Apart from popularising bird-watching, it will also help gather information on the common birds in the city. Most of the birding will be done in and around human habitations, towns, college campuses and wetlands.

The participants will be organised into teams so that at least one expert bird-watcher will be with each team. The teams will be sent to locations in and around Thiruvananthapuram. A standard reporting format has been prepared by the organisers.

Experience-sharing

The experience-sharing and valedictory function will be held at 5.30 p.m.

Prizes await the team that records the maximum number of birds and the bird of the day and for the eldest and youngest bird-watcher.

Registration

Participants may register their names with A.K. Sivakumar, Education Officer, WWF-India (e-mail: wwfklso@gmail.com/ asivakumar@wwfindia.net) or on phone number 0471 2302265.
