Tension at Kaikaluru

Staff Reporter

KAIKALURU: Tension prevailed here on Wednesday when local MLA Jayamangala Venkataramana of the Telugu Desam Party and former MLA Yerneni Raja Ramachandar of the Congress made competitive arrangements to lay foundation stones for erecting the statues of late chief ministers N.T. Rama Rao and Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, respectively, on the premises of old Tahsildar office.

The high drama ended with the officials sanctioning permission to the MLA as well as the former MLA to conduct ‘Bhoomipooja’ ceremony. Trouble began when Mr. Ramachandar announced his proposal two days ago to erect the statue of YSR. Responding to the statement, Mr. Venkataramana announced his plan to install the statue of NTR at the same spot.

The police promulgated Section 144 of the IPC from Tuesday and deputed additional forces. The officials initially accorded permission only to Mr. Ramachandar, which led to the staging of dharna by the TDP workers. Later, the officials granted permission to both leaders.

Mr. Ramachandar, however, asserted that he would oppose the installation of the statue of NTR. He submitted a memorandum to the Tahsildar to this effect.
