Jamia celebrations begin today

To mark the Foundation Day of the university


NEW DELHI: Three-day celebrations marking the Foundation Day of Jamia Millia Islamia here will begin this Thursday with different departments organising a slew of activities like exhibitions and lectures.

The Zakir Husain Library has mounted a photo exhibition on “Jamia Evolution and Growth”, which will be inaugurated by S.A. Ali, Director of Hamdard Archives and Research Centre, on Thursday at 12 noon.

Separately, the K.R. Narayanan Centre for Dalit and Minorities Studies is showcasing an exhibition on “Subaltern Aesthetics and Dalit Iconography” by eminent artist Savi Sawarkar. It will be inaugurated by University Grants Commission chairperson S.K. Thorat in the Ansari Auditorium lawns on the same day at 11:45 a.m.

Union Tourism Minister Kumari Selja will preside over a symposium on “Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989” being organised by the same Centre on Thursday evening at 5 p.m. at Mir Taqi Mir Hall.

The Centre will also screen a film, “The Other Side of Silence-Contemporary Depiction of Exclusion in the Indian Society” in the Ansari Auditorium lawns on Friday at 6 p.m.Different departments of Jamia have also organised memorial lectures.

The Department of Social Work is holding the second S.R. Mohsini Memorial Lecture on “Women as agents of change in contemporary India” by Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed on Thursday at 2 p.m.

The Zakir Husain Institute of Islamic Studies has organised the Prof. Mohammad Mujeeb Memorial Lecture 2009 on “Pragmatism vs. dogmatism: Professor Mujeeb’s thought” to be delivered by former diplomat Ishrat Aziz. It will be held at Yasser Arafat Hall on Friday at 10-30 a.m.

The University will also be holding its annual Convocation the same day at 3:30 p.m. on Ansari Auditorium lawns.
