Congress, Telugu Desam trying to please government officials

G.V. Ramana Rao

Both the parties intend to felicitate those who worked hard during floods

VIJAYAWADA: The ruling Congress and the main opposition, the Telugu Desam, seem to be vying with each other to woo government officials in the wake of recent developments in the State.

The Telugu Desam Party has recently announced that the officials who worked “at the hour of need” during the recent floods in the Krishna, which wreaked havoc in five districts, would be felicitated under the banner of NTR Memorial Trust.

Special dinner

As if taking a cue from political rivals, Minister for Animal Husbandry K. Parthasarothi was quick to announce that the officials who worked well in Krishna district will be felicitated on November 1, the Andhra Pradesh Formation Day.

The Minister also said that he would host a special dinner for all the employees who worked “hard” during the floods.

Cadre upbeat

The Congress cadres in the district have received the announcement of the Minister with applause.

They say that it is a good call, from the point of view of both administration and politics.

According to them, government employees in the State were up in arms against the TDP which had been targeting them for the damage caused by the deluge in the Krishna.

“One side they are finding fault with the officials and at the same time they want to please them by felicitating them,” says PCC secretary Kolanukonda Sivaji.

‘Damage control’

He says that the felicitations that are sought to be organised by the TDP are also part of a “damage control” programme, as the image of the opposition party had taken a beating in the public uproar that followed the suicide of Mandal Agriculture Officer Rajeswari in Devarakadra in Mahabubnagar district.

However, TDP sympathisers in the district say that the ruling Congress could announce such felicitations only in Krishna district where the officials had advance notice of the flood.

Though the flood wreaked havoc in five districts, officials of only Krishna district worked efficiently.

Accolades were showered on Machilipatnam Revenue Divisional Officer K. Hymavathi by both TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu and Mr. Parthasarathi alike, they point out.
