Commuters confused by changes in train schedules

MANGALORE: When Shyamala Vishwanath, a BSNL employee, booked her train ticket from here to Chennai for November 1 three months ago, the ticket did not mention the time of departure of the Chennai Express.

Even on Thursday afternoon, there was no information on the time of departure at the reservation counter at Mangalore Central Station. She did not want to miss a marriage in Chennai scheduled for the day.

Madhusudan Rao, a bank employee, realised a little while after leaving the booking counter that the departure timing was missing on the ticket, which said: “New timetable from November 1”. He was asked to call 2423137 for information a day before his journey.

The confusion has arisen because of a different monsoon schedule that the Konkan Railway follows from June 10 to October 31.

While Southern Railway sources said the new schedules would be announced on Friday, Konkan Railway has posted a press note on its website.

The website mentioned that (train number 2653/2654) Kochuveli-Chandigarh-Kochuveli Kerala Sampark Kranti Express will become train no. 2217/2218 from November 1. The train from Kochuveli will arrive at Mangalore Junction at 8.35 p.m. and leave at 8.45 p.m., and the pairing train will arrive at 2.10 a.m. and leave at 2.20 a.m. from November 1.

The arrivals and departures of various trains at Mangalore Junction from November 1 are as follows, according to the press note on the website: (train no. 2431) Trivandrum-H. Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express, 6 a.m. and 6.10 a.m.; (train no. 2432) H. Nizamuddin-Trivandram Rajdhani Express, 5.45 p.m. and 5.55 p.m.; (train no. 2977) Ernakulam-Ajmer Marusagar Express 4.55 a.m. and 5.05 a.m.; and (train no. 2978) Ajmer-Ernakulam Marusagar Express 7.05 p.m. and 7.15 p.m.; (train no. 2617) Ernakulam-H. Nizamuddin Mangala Express 10.05 p.m. and 10.15 p.m.; and (train no. 2618) H. KR1) Verna-Mangalore Passenger 8.55 p.m. (arrival); (train no. 2620) Mangalore-Lokamanya Tilak Terminal Matsyagandha Express 2.40 p.m. (departure) and (train no. 2619) Lokamanya Tilak Terminal-Mangalore Matsyagandha Express 6.20 a.m. (arrival).
