CHENNAI: If the government takes any action against police officials following the Madras High Court judgment in the case pertaining to the clash between lawyers and police on the High Court premises, it will demoralise the force, Tamil Nadu Police Welfare Association president K. Anthonysamy has said. “The High Court is a public place. In the event of a cognizable offence, the police are duty-bound to take action as per law…it requires nobody’s permission to do it. The Chennai Police did just that on February 19. However, we want to respect the judgment,” Mr. Anthonysamy told The Hindu on Thursday. At a juncture when terrorism is growing in the country with extremists causing explosions and hijacking trains, the police and armed forces have to be encouraged. “It is the responsibility of the government, judiciary and the people to encourage the police and other uniformed services.” Mr. Anthonysamy said the government should go for an appeal in the Supreme Court contesting the Madras High Court judgment. “I have written to the Bar Council of India seeking action against some advocates who took law into their hands on February 19. I even offered to provide evidence. But there is no reply to my complaint for the last five months,” he added.
