RECORDS OF PAST: Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy at the exhibition of archival records in Chennai on Thursday. — CHENNAI: Archives play a vital role in providing authentic information about the history of a country. With this view the State government has been giving special attention to maintenance of records of the State administration and other important events for the benefit of posterity, said Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin here on Thursday. Participating in the centenary celebrations of Department of Tamil Nadu Archives and Historical Research, Mr. Stalin said that at present there was no complete record of the State history though inscriptions, and paintings available in temples gave glimpses of Chera, Chola, and Pandiya periods. To keep the available records intact, the department was constituted and the earliest records preserved in the archives belonged to 1657. The records here would be useful for the World Classical Tamil conference being held in Coimbatore next year, he added. State Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy, who presided over the function, distributed prizes to students who won in quiz competition conducted in connection with the celebrations. State Information Minister Parithi Ellamvazhuthi inaugurated an exhibition of archival records. K. Ganesan, Principal Secretary, Higher Education, said that records pertaining to the execution of Veerapandia Kattabomman, 7th century records, State administrative records of successive governments and Assembly records were well preserved in the Archives department. Ramesh Kumar Khanna, Principal Secretry/ Commissioner of Archives and Historical Research, said it was one of the biggest archives in South East Asia.
