Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Kanaka Raju, 22, who was caught in connection with a robbery committed four days ago, attempted suicide by trying to set himself on fire when he was brought to the Tukaramgate police station on Thursday. He suffered minor burns and was taken to hospital.

A resident of Vaddera street in Addagutta, the accused, along with three others, waylaid a motorcyclist, robbed him of his valuables and took away his bike four days ago at Mahendra Hills. While his associates were arrested and remanded in judicial custody, Raju was absconding.

He was caught and brought to the police station on Thursday. Somehow, he managed to carry a small bottle of kerosene with him. He sprinkled the kerosene on him and lit a matchstick after being taken to the bathroom in the morning, the police said.
