Soumya joins Padmini in second spot

NEW DELHI: Soumya Swaminathan joined teammate Padmini Rout in the tied second spot after the latter surrendered the lead to Russia’s Zoja Severiukhina in the girls’ seventh round of the World junior chess championship at Puerto Madryn, Argentina, on Tuesday.

On a day when Padmini was the only Indian to lose, Soumya marched to her fourth victory after beating Goergia’s Nazi Paikidze and reached five points. The two Indians share the second spot with five others.

In the Open section, M.R. Lalith Babu did well to hold 14th seeded Brazilian Grandmaster Andre Diamant in 20 moves.

Sergei Zhigalko (Belarus) emerged as the leader with six points after beating Israel’s Maxim Rodshtein. Top seeded French contender Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, the joint overnight leader with Zhigalko, drew with China’s Li Chao to tally 5.5 points.

The results (seventh round, involving Indians): Open: M.R. Lalith Babu (4.5) drew with Andre Diamant (Bra, 4.5); B. Adhiban (4.5) bt Thiabut Maenhout (Bel, 3.5); Ashwin Jayaram (4.5) bt Vishnu Prasanna (3.5); Emanuel Schiendorfer (Sui, 4) drew with P. Karthikeyan (3.5); Wouter Gryson (Bel, 3) lost to Shyam Sundar (4).

Girls: Zoja Severiukhina (Rus, 5.5) bt Padmini Rout (5); Soumya Swaminathan (5) bt Nazi Paikidze (Geo, 4); Anna Hayrapetyan (Arm, 4.5) drew with Kiran Manisha Mohanty (4.5); Mary Ann Gomes (3.5) bt Anu Bayer (Mgl, 3); S. Harini (3) drew with Tereza Olsarova (Cze, 3).
