Better deal for national research professors

P. Sunderarajan

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday decided to revise the honorarium, pension and contingency allowances for eminent academicians and scholars covered under the Scheme of National Research Professorship.

With effect from April 1, the honorarium has been raised from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 75,000 a month, the pension from Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 25,000 and the annual contingency grant from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh.

The honorarium and pension will continue to be exempt from Income Tax under section 10 (17A) of the Income Tax Act.

The scheme has been in operation since 1949 to honour distinguished academicians and scholars. Persons of eminence who attained the age of 65 and who have made outstanding contributions in their fields and are still capable of productive research are eligible.

The appointment is made initially for five years, which is extendable by another five years. After the completion of the first term or the extended term, a National Research Professor is entitled to a life pension.

Chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Cabinet meeting also approved the creation of one post of Adviser to the Law and Justice Minister — on a contract basis for one year — in the rank, pay and status of Secretary to the government.

The Adviser would carry out initiatives to facilitate the Ministry taking forward reforms in the legal and judicial sectors expeditiously, Home Minister and Cabinet spokesperson P. Chidambaram said, briefing journalists.

More in Manipur ST list

The Cabinet cleared a proposal to introduce a Bill in Parliament to include six more communities in the list of Scheduled Tribes in Manipur.
