Thrissur: Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare S. Gandhiselvan has called upon Ayurvedic drug manufactures to upgrade themselves to tap the global potential for traditional medicines. He was speaking after inaugurating Research and Development Centre of Ushadhi (Oushadhi Pharmaceutical Corporation Kerala Limited) at Kuttanellur on Friday. “The global market for traditional medicines is growing at a rate of 20 per cent. The world is turning to holistic approach in healthcare. But emerging infectious diseases and concern over quality of drugs pose new challenges for traditional medicines.” He urged the Ayurvedic drug manufactures to focus more on research and development activities to address the new challenges in the globalised market. More stress was needed on drug safety evaluation, standardisation, quality control, and scientific validation of Ayurvedic medicines, he pointed out. The Centre had signed MoUs with foreign countries such as Brazil, South Africa, China, the U.S. and Russia for promotion of Ayurvedic medicines, the Minister said.
