Two buses damaged in stone-throwing incidents Skirmishes at a few places, yet situation was brought under control
TRIBUTE TO LEADER: Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Alagiri paying homage at the Muthuramalinga Thevar memorial at Pasumpon in Ramanathapuram district on Friday. — PASUMPON (RAMNATHAPURAM): The 102nd celebrations of Muthuramalinga Thevar jayanthi passed off peacefully on Friday, barring a few incidents of stone-throwing. Hundreds of people, including leaders of various political parties and Ministers, paid homage. Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Alagiri; State Ministers I. Periasamy, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, S. Thangavelan, Thangam Thennarasu, K.R. Periakaruppan and R. Tamilarasi were among those who visited the samadhi. AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam; MDMK general secretary Vaiko; N.S.V. Chitthan, Member of Parliament; G.K. Mani, PMK president; Subramanian Swamy, president, Janata Party; H. Raja and Pon. Radhakrishnan, State leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and former BJP Minister S. Thirunavukarasar also paid tributes at the Samadhi. An incident of stone-throwing was reported at Muthuramalinga Puram near Mandalamanickam, a village bordering Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts, in which the windscreen of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus was damaged. Another TNSTC bus suffered damage when stones were thrown at it by a group near Abiramam. Though there were skirmishes at a few places, the police promptly brought the situation under control. Elaborate bandobust arrangements were in place. Additional Director General of Police K. Radhakrishnan supervised security arrangements. S.S. Krishnamoorthy, Inspector General of Police (South Zone), told The Hindu that except minor incidents, the jayanthi (which also marks the guru puja) went off peacefully. The police had been directed to remain vigilant to ensure peace in the region in the coming days too.
