IGNOU to set up community college

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is to set up a mega community college campus project in Pathanamthitta, Anto Antony, MP, told The Hindu here on Friday.

Mr. Antony said the proposed campus would be the only centre other than the one in New Delhi to be directly managed by the university.

IGNOU Vice-Chancellor V.N. Rajashekharan Pillai told The Hindu that the university had already reached an understanding with the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church for hiring 10,000 sq ft in two buildings in Pathanamthitta town and nearby Kaippattor for the purpose.

He said the State should take necessary steps to provide land for the university to set up a full-fledged campus.

Courses will commence at the community college in January next. Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari will inaugurate the campus in November 2010, he said.

Mr. Antony said the IGNOU campus will be beneficial to many who find entry into the formal system difficult. The university had agreed to set up different divisions of the proposed community college at various locations depending on the availability of space, he said.

The proposed community college would offer certificate, diploma, and postgraduate courses in 37 subjects.
