KOZHIKODE: Land will be acquired equally from both sides, except at curves, for the widening of the NH 17. This was decided at a meeting of people’s representatives convened by Land Acquisition Deputy Collector P.P.M. Ashraf at the collectorate here on Friday. The road would be laid at a proper elevation so as to prevent water-logging. Land acquisition for road widening had spurned protests from people. The road, which runs 74 km through the district, starts from Azhiyur Excise check-post and extends to Ramanattukara. It passes through 14 villages in three taluks. Flyovers will be constructed only at Kainatti Junction. A four-lane bridge will be constructed across the Moorad river. A proposal to limit the proposed bypass at Nandi Chengottukavu to 30 metres and widen the road through the Koyilandy town as per NH standards will be placed before the government, according to Koyilandy municipal chairman K. Dasan and P. Viswan, MLA. Mr. Ashraf said the suggestions of the meeting would be forwarded to the government. The notification would be issued and the foundations laid next week itself, he said. Steps would be taken to register the land after holding talks with land owners on a fast-track purchase basis. National Highways Authority of India Project Director V. Subburao, NH Executive Engineer Gopalakrishnan and presidents of grama panchayats attended the meeting.
