Munna Bajrangi being taken to court on Friday. NEW DELHI: Munna Bajrangi and his alleged accomplice arrested in Mumbai by the Special Cell of the Delhi police were on Friday produced in a Delhi court that remanded them to 10 days’ police custody. Addressing a press conference, Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal said the Special Cell had been on Bajrangi’s trail for the past three years. In September, the police received information that he had contacted a Delhi-based businessman in a bid to extort protection money. Accordingly a case was registered and investigations taken up. A team led by Inspectors Lalit Mohan Negi and Hridaya Bhushan zeroed in on Bajrangi and found that he had been hiding somewhere in the Malad area of Mumbai. Subsequently the team was sent to Mumbai on October 21 and a search operation launched. On Thursday, the police managed to locate the apartment in which Bajrangi had been living for the past four years. The Special Cell sleuths raided the flat in Siddhi Vinayak Society in Malad West and arrested Bajrangi’s accomplice Mahender, a resident of Santa Cruz in Mumbai. During interrogation, Mahender purportedly disclosed that Bajrangi would meet him on the Mumbai-Surat Highway near Chinchoti. A trap was laid and the most wanted U.P. gangster arrested. Asked if Bajrangi was involved in the murder of “encounter specialist” Rajbir Singh, the Police Commissioner said no such evidence had come up so far. Preliminary investigations have revealed that Bajrangi has been named in at least 18 criminal cases, including 11 murders, registered in Jaunpur, Varanasi, Ghazipur and Delhi. He was wanted by the Delhi police in two cases. According to the police, he killed BJP MLA Anil Rai and four others in Varanasi in 2003 and in November 2005 he and his accomplices gunned down BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai and seven others.
